I naively thought my second pregnancy and labour would mirror that of my first, how wrong was I! Ruby was born at just over 37 weeks, my waters went first, contractions started a few hours later in the early hours and she was born at 10.37am that morning. I went through my second pregnancy gleefully expecting the same to happen, however it did not. From 36 weeks my midwife told me I was fully engaged and that she too expected the baby to come at a similar time to my first. Well 37 weeks came and went, 38 weeks passed us by and by 39 weeks I was so disappointed she wasn’t here yet and I was still not even full term. The one silver lining was starting maternity leave and getting extra weeks to spend with Ruby, one-on-one before the new arrival. This summer was one of the hottest I can remember and although it was uncomfortable being pregnant, I was glad the baby decided to stay put until it got slightly cooler.
Now I am officially on maternity leave, I feel that I should probably get my hospital bag packed. After reading different peoples lists, I have narrowed mine down a little as some of the lists were so extensive you would need a good couple of suitcases to fit everything in!
We have 3 bags, one for me, one for Chris and one for the baby!
So in my bag I have decided to pack:
- Birth plan/notes
- Loose fitting PJs
- Dressing gown and slippers
- Change of clothes
- A pack of big knickers from Primark!
- A large pack of maternity pads
- Toiletries – toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wipes, lip balm and a hair brush
- Still Lucosade and a few sugary snacks
- Nursing bra
- Camera and charger
- Money for car park
- Comfortable clothes
- 4 baby sleepsuits
- Nappies x 10 (size 1)
- Scratch mitts
- Going home outfit
- Cotton wool balls
- Muslin squares
It does seem like a lot but compared to some of the lists I have seen it’s actually quite minimal.
Everything has suddenly started to feel very real now.
5 weeks to go!
